Port wine dates
back to the time the Portuguese were given trade
preference with the English, in lieu of the war
with France. British wool was traded for Portuguese.
Thus it was the English who first created Port
and named it after the Portuguese city Oporto-meaning “port”.
Port is made from Portuguese wine “fortified”
with brandy making it sweet and rich. Port still
remains the after-dinner drink of the academic and
the gentleman. A true gentleman, at the dinner table,
will always pass the decanter clockwise.
